Veterinarians

Although born in Northern California, Dr. Sandra Barclay has lived in the Chicago area since the 1960's. She earned both her Bachelor of Science Degree in Veterinary Medicine and her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois in 1974 and 1976 respectively. After completing a small animal internship and surgical residency at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, Dr. Barclay returned to the Chicago area and opened the Abbeywood Cat Clinic. Her professional interests include feline soft tissues surgery, geriatrics, and diseases of the urinary tract.
Dr. Barclay's business associate is also her husband, Dr. William Barclay, co-owner of the Abbeywood Cat Clinic. Dr. Barclay has a son, Mac, a 2006 West Point graduate currently serving in the U.S. Army. Dr. Barclay shares her home with two cats and a Greater Swiss Mountain dog. When away from the hospital she enjoys traveling, gardening and cooking.

Dr. William Barclay, co-owner of the Abbeywood Cat Clinic, has been a full-time veterinarian at the clinic since 1992. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois in 1974, Dr. Barclay was awarded his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine in 1976, graduating as the class salutatorian. Following his formal education with an internship and surgical residency at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, Dr. Barclay went on to become one of the only board certified veterinary surgeons who works exclusively with felines. Dr. Barclay has also taught a basic surgery lab to medical students at the University of Chicago. Among his areas of professional interest, feline orthopedic surgery and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract top the list. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association as well as the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.
Dr. Barclay is married to Dr. Sandra Barclay, co-owner and founder of Abbeywood Cat Clinic. Together they have a son, Mac, who is a 2006 West Point graduate currently serviing in the U.S. Army. At home, Dr. Barclay keeps company two cats and a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. During his leisure time, Dr. Barclay likes riding motorcycles, reading and flying.

Dr. Carol Fuhrman has been an associate veterinarian at Abbeywood Cat Clinic since 1996. Previous to joining the staff at the cat clinic, Dr. Fuhrman was a veterinarian at the Buffalo Grove Animal Hospital and the Des Plaines Animal Hospital. She is a 1973 graduate of Ohio State University and a 1985 graduate of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Fuhrman's professional interests are varied and include internal medicine, cardiology, reproduction and pediatrics. She is a member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Outside the hospital, Dr. Fuhrman enjoys gardening during the warm weather months, specifically perennials and organic vegetables. During the colder months, she likes to quilt contemporary wall hangings. Dr. Fuhrman shares her home with five cats: two Somalis and three domestic short hairs, including one named Sophie who was orphaned at Abbeywood Cat Clinic.

An associate veterinarian at Abbeywood Cat Clinic since 1998, Dr. Jeanmarie McInerney earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois in 1981. She has a particular interest in feline dental diseases and dentistry, but also studies feline endocrine and thyroid diseases such as diabetes. Dr. McInerney shares her home with her two cats and guinea pig.
